Beneath the beautiful surface: a paradise overrun by violence and corruption.

In the shadow of glistening white sands and serene turquoise waters of what was once considered a paradise- the Maldives. The picturesque beaches, which once symbolized peace and tranquility, now stand a grim contrast to the surge of violence, murder, and armed robbery that bedevils the nation. The utopian appearance is further marred by a political sphere tainted by corruption and deception, casting a shadow over the tranquil front of this coastal heaven.

“In its vibrant history Maldives lost sovereignty only twice, first to the Portuguese for a mere 15 years during the 15th century: then to the Malabar’s of south India for a year in the 18th century. Both time Maldives fought back and won back their rightful sovereignty”- Mahil Mohamed. Perhaps the third time we lose our sovereignty to ourselves? What do we do then, fight each other?

Envision a country once known for its calm, peace and serene beauty- where air felt lighter and refreshing, and peace was embedded in the essence of daily existence. A place where neighbors watched over one another, the rhythm of life was slow, steady and safe. It was a safe haven, an oasis, unscathed by the chaos of the outside world, a nation that stood as a symbol of harmony and decency.

But now the peacefulness is slipping right through our fingers. The serenity has been scattered to the winds by the surge of murder and violent crimes were once unthinkable. Armed robberies in the broad daylight, once rare and shocking, have become horrifyingly widespread. Every day headlines are flooded with news of accidents, lives cut short unexpectedly, with scant consideration for human life. All kinds of terrible catastrophe. The violence and the disregard. No empathy, no sympathy.

The political realm, a place for honest leadership and transparency, has become a swamp of corruption and deceit. Greed and authority have substituted social good, dirty politics have left the people feeling hopeless, betrayed and unprotected. Promises to feel nothing but distant.

What used to be a peaceful island nation full of dignity has become a war zone of survival, where safety is not promised, and the future seems more delicate than ever. The essence of nation is bleeding, the spirit of people is fading away. Where is empathy? How have you become so blind to the value of life? How did we lose our way so far off course? What have we ultimately become? Is this progress? Is this growth? Is this so-called freedom? Is this the future we offer for our children?
