No. International intervention to stop the fighting in Darfur has failed several times. Why? This is not an easy question to give an absolute answer.
“Third Party Intervention” often fails. In my viewpoint, third party intervention is not an effective measure. First of all, we have to seek for “Direct Involvement”. It is merely impossible to succeed in just one attempt by the direct parties. It does not necessarily mean that they cannot resolve the problem. It also does not mean that they cannot develop a policy to deal with it. It all depends on the genuine efforts placed by politicians and other relevant agencies. Third party involvement in conflict resolution has shown a high degree of failure at all times. Therefore, in Darfur also we cannot expect that international interventions would achieve miracles.
1] WHERE IS DARFUR? DOES INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY REALLY KNOW DARFUR?
These are fundamental questions one must answer. Power and authority might not sometimes work to the extent that we expect it to be. Therefore, we ought to be very careful in every step that we place in the process of conflict resolution of serious problems like killing in Darfur. It is really very unfortunate rather, that officials from powerful nations do not seem knowing the ground realities. So, let me explain a little bit about Darfur before I attempt to propose policy alternatives.
2] DARFUR
Darfur is a region of western Sudan that occupies one fifth of the area of Sudan. It is larger than Egypt and is almost equal to the area of France. It borders Libya to the north-west, Chad to the west, and the Central African Republic to the south-west. This is the location. Can just somebody think of this area and the boarders with a critical thinking? This is why location seems important. Now, let me quickly look into the ground realities of Darfur.
3] REALITY OF DARFUR
Many international observers come up with only a disjointed picture; disjointed conclusions and unrealistic solutions. Therefore, what we called “root causes” are often left out in dark. This has been the case for the past several years. I wonder if a proper study has been done to understand the underlining causes for the conflict by them.
Darfur issue is incredibly complex, A combination of lazy and often sensationalist media coverage and the activities of an already active anti- Sudanese campaign have sought to reduce the incredibly complex, an attempt by an Arab-dominated government in Khartoum to wipe out its black citizens in Darfur has intensified into a humanitarian crisis. Darfur rebels are those who started the conflict by attacking police, army and nomadic leaders and communities killing hundreds of policemen and breaking law and order in the country. Some readily available information for public consumption gives readers about how clever manipulators have distorted the realities of Darfur to serve their political agenda, and in so doing deliberately tarnishing the image of Sudan in order to detract from and destabilize the peace agreement ending decades of civil war in southern Sudan. For a simple political dialogue officials needed to call for a disastrous international military intervention in western Sudan. This is the platform on which the crisis grew up. In fact, some neighbors put oil on fire. Ultimately, the international political dialogues came out like skyrockets. This formed the present day Darfur. Who have sympathy on those families who have lost their loved ones and some families have been murdered in its entirety. But we all drink coffee and a coke while talking about Darfur, the international community.
4] WHAT SHOULD THEY DO?
Immediately, take the politics out of the process. This is the simple reason why they should find a way out by themselves. If not, it is not possible. A readily available computerized program does not exist for Darfur conflict resolution. Third party involvement fails everywhere. So, Sudanese should have the faith and wisdom to overcome their own problems. No better policy alternative is available for them. They should need peace for peaceful life. Don’t wait for others to feed you peace! Darfur can be rehabilitated into a wonder.
